TO DISCOVER

Le château de Rosa Bonheur

Set in the peaceful Seine-et-Marne countryside, Château de By was bought by painter, Rosa Bonheur in 1859. She lived there until 1899 and had the studio of her dreams built, which has remained intact for 120 years and reveals to visitors a form of intimacy with the artist. Rosa Bonheur, animal painter whose works have travelled the world, was an astonishing figure of the XIXth century. Since the Empress Eugenie and Napoleon III, to the romanesque Buffalo Bill, and recently the indefatigable Stephane Bern, Rosa Bonheur has brought the crowned heads and personalities of her time and ours into her studio. Extract reassuring spectacle

‘… The moon in the day is warm and pale

like a joyful convalescent ;

Tender, it opens its opal eyes from

where the sweetness of the sky descends !

The wallflower with the bee Plays

while kissing the old wall ;

The warm furrow awakens gaily,

Stirred by the dark germ.

Everything lives, and settles with grace,

The ray on the open threshold,

The shadow that flees on the water that passes

The blue sky on the green hillside !

…’

Victor Hugo (1802-1885)
